What Is Myopia Control?

Myopia control is an area of eye care that uses different tools and treatments to prevent or slow myopia progression. We keep a close eye on your child’s vision and adjust our plan as they grow.

Depending on your child’s specific needs, our team can prescribe myopia management options that include:

  • Ortho-k contact lenses
  • NaturalVue contact lenses
  • MiSight 1 day lenses
  • Low-dose atropine drops

Myopia in Children

When children have myopia, it can affect their ability to learn and succeed in school. The further a thing is, the blurrier it appears to them. This can be challenging for kids during class time. That’s why it’s so important to keep myopia in check to help them have a productive learning experience.

Children who develop myopia before age 12 may also have a higher risk of high myopia. High myopia can increase a child’s lifetime risk of:

  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Retinal tears and retinal detachment
  • Myopic macular degeneration

The Signs & Symptoms of Myopia

Myopia can have various signs and symptoms. It’s important to keep an eye on any new developments or changes in behavior, such as:

  • Squinting to see distant objects
  • Blurry vision when looking at faraway objects
  • Headaches
  • Eye strain
  • Sitting too close to screens

If your kids are experiencing these symptoms or you notice these symptoms, a comprehensive eye exam with our team can help. We can determine if myopia control methods such as ortho-k lenses could be beneficial for your child.

Zeiss ATLAS for Myopia Management

The Zeiss ATLAS corneal topographer allows our team to better understand and manage myopia through accurate measurements of the cornea.

Equipped with high-resolution imaging and video capture capabilities, the Zeiss ATLAS can provide valuable information about the shape and structure of the cornea. We use this technology to help determine the right myopia control method for your child.

Our Myopia Control Methods

We use proven methods to slow down the progression of myopia for children’s growing eyes. Your child’s treatment plan could include specially formulated eye drops or contact lenses designed specifically for myopia control.

Our doctors work with you and your child to find the right myopia control method for your child’s needs and comfort.

Ortho-k Contact Lenses

Orthokeratology contact lenses, also known as ortho-k lenses, are worn overnight by children to reshape the cornea and manage the progression of myopia. In the morning, your kids can simply remove the lenses and enjoy clear vision all day long. The changes to vision are temporary, but the long-term reduction of myopia progression can be permanent.

Ortho-k lenses offer a great solution for managing mild to moderate myopia in children, and can be helpful for children who engage in physical activities such as sports, as they can participate without concerns about breaking or losing their glasses.

MiSight 1 day lenses are soft contact lenses that can assist with managing myopia for children. These lenses feature ActivControl technology, which helps correct and decelerate myopia progression in children aged 8–12 years old at the beginning of their treatment.

By altering the way light focuses on the retina, these lenses can help prevent and slow myopia progression by signaling the eye to decrease its growth. Clinical studies have demonstrated that MiSight contacts can reduce myopia by an average of 59%, and many kids find them preferable to glasses.

NaturalVue contact lenses are multifocal contact lenses designed specifically for myopia management and are clinically proven to help control the progression of myopia. They provide a convenient daily disposable option for optimal hygiene and comfort.

NaturalVue contact lenses offer a customizable solution for a range of prescriptions.

Low-dose atropine eye drops can help manage myopia by suppressing the eye’s growth. However, we may still recommend wearing contact lenses or glasses during the day to help keep your child’s vision clear.
